Location: Oshkosh, WI | I am looking for a boat for around $6500 that I can fish on Winnebago and smaller lakes with 3-4 people. I am leaning toward a 17' and getting something older, but better built. I have looked a some of the "cheaper" brands and have not been impressed with the quality. 16' just seems to small for my family.
Any advice would be welcomed. |

Location: LaCrosse, WI | You can find boats that fit your guidlines. You will have to look hard and be patient. 17-18' seems to be the right size range for you. As with most boats in this range, you will have to pick your days on bigger water. You will have to decide what items are most important to you to stay within your budget.
You can find used glass boats with bigger motors in this price range from time to time. I once found a 95 Champion FishHunter with a 150 merc EFI in that price range. It was very solid, and the motor ran great. There were some cosmetic blemishes, but those were covered up by some decals. If you are willing to do a little extra work to make your rig look good, then your goal is certainly attainable.
Answer these questions and you should have an idea what to look for.
Do you want console or tiller?
Do you have a preference of glass or aluminum?
What speed ranges do you require (not to set speed records, but to feel safe getting on and off the water)?
How much money are you going to be willing to spend on gas for your boat?
You may have to give one or two of the above up to fit your budget, but overall you could reach it. I just saw a 96 Ranger 682 (I think that's what it was) in good shape with a 115 go for around $7500. You might want to consider watching over on the west side of the state. I just saw a 97 Lund Angler Pro 17' with a 2002 60 Yamaha 4 stroke go for less than $7000. There's not a huge market over here for bigger boats (17' and up). I'll let you know if I see any other deals in the next few weeks. |

Location: Appleton wi | Joe the best advice i can give you is when you find one you like "buy it" the older boats in your price range the have been well kept go very quick and there is usually a small window when there is a good selection. GNWC rookie has some good advice on selection critiria |
