A friend and I went to Lake Pepin today. We got the boat on the water at 6:45am. You could feel the cold chill in the air and it was really windy. We started our day at the rocky shore near the Hok-Si-La boat landing. My first fish came at 6:55am and was a nice 16 inch sauger, which came from 9 fow, right off the break line. With no more bites we moved to Hok-Si-La Point and fished the break line just east of the rocky campground. I caught a 15 inch walleye in 12 fow. My friend caught a White Bass and I started to catch Sheepies. We left once the Sheepies were the only fish biting.
Next up was Digger’s Point. The wind was hitting this point really hard. On the south side of the point I caught another sauger in about 16 fow. My friend caught two decent sized perch. We maneuvered around the point several times. I caught another 15 inch walleye, but not before my share of Sheepies. After awhile we headed north to Hanson’s Habor and tried the break line. I caught some more Sheepies. I did manage to catch another sauger on the drop off near the white house.
It was about noon now, and we decided to try Hok-Si-La Point once again before we left for the day. My friend decided to switch to a chartreuse Phelp’s Floater like I was using. As soon as his sinker hit the bottom of the lake he had a fish on! He caught only one sauger for the day, but it was the biggest. It topped out at 19 inches. I ended up catching another sauger, but it wasn’t much bigger than the minnows we were using
I ended up catching 2 walleyes and 4 saugers, so I caught my limit for the day. I lost count on the number of Sheepies I caught throughout the day. My friend caught one White Bass, 2 perch and 1 nice sauger.
The two baits of the day were a chartreuse Phelp’s Floater with a 2 to 3 foot leader and a chartreuse jig head with a green twister tail. Both were tipped with minnows.

Location: Lake City MN | Hi Slayer, thanks for the report.
We have been putting decent numbers of fish in the boat mostly trolling cranks and stick baits. Both the WI and MN shorelines have been great. The bite has been day to day in most areas and you better have more than one place to fish to put fish in the boat on a daily basis, much like last year. All in all the season is off to a great start.

Location: Rochester, MN | I saw you on the Midwest Outdoors show not too long ago. Unfortunately, I didn't recognize some of the spots you and Bob were fishing in. It was a very informative show. |
