| hi all,
we went out yesterday and tried out a different prop on my 1890 DW.
running 2 people, full tank of gas, full gear, plus a bit of extra weight up front.
the Merc Tempest prop that i've been running all year performed as it normally does: fast, fast, fast. lots of power, you can feel the thrust and it loves to run. at times it feels a bit "choppy", especially when going slow(er) and the boat is more prone to moving around a bit when you're running.
the Merc HighFive we tried out ran very differently. Mr. Worrall describes this as the best all-around prop for the 1890/200 Opti and i have to agree. right off the bat it felt smoother at slow speeds. it put us up on plane quicker, and gave an overall much smoother ride than the Tempest, especially when cutting waves. there was a 3mph loss of high-end speed at WOT, but this was more than made up for by the 12mph gain in low-end speed on plane. i could run the boat on plane at under 20mph, something the Tempest didn't have quite enough lift to do.
i'm switching to the HighFive. speed is cool, but the 3mph isn't that important to me and the combination of keeping some weight up front plus the prop smoothed out the ride and really made a big difference.
tonight? fishing!
