Subject: Casting Cranks

Hello

I have been attempting to find a decent casting rod for throwing smaller cranks Like the CC shad or flicker shad and number 5 rapalas. I currently use a 7 foot medium daiwa rod and have been looking at the longer steelhead/salmon rods by fenwich HMX8'3", shimano (clarus) 8'6". are there other options that you guys find suitable?

Thanks
Trevor

I've had good results with the same length rod. Maybe up to an 8 footer, lite tip. I have however, gone to the smallest diameter line possible. That seems to be the answer for me.

dont be afraid to take cut the tip off and put on on with a larger eye, try to buy a good fuji that will fit well and not add weight , the line will fire out with a little less resistance... works good for me with small jigs... not much a guy can do if the wind is in your face... adding a split shot a foot above works well too.. id hate cut a rod tip off bit sometimes it stuffins up the tip a bit and makes the rod just perfect if its a little fast at the tip anyway.. start with the split shot first, on a tight line it will not sink and does give you more weight to throw...

I use a 7' spinning rod for casting cranks. The biggest help I've found is having a big reel. The big spinning reel lets more line come off. I currenty have 3 different crankbait casting rods. I have a Rapala 7' with an Okuma Epixor 10 ball bearing spinning reel (the big one). That casts pretty far even with a smaller crank.

I have another Rapala 7' with the big Rapala reel. That one doesn't cast quite as far. The last one that I use is a 7' Gary Roach series bottom bouncer rod with a Pflueger Trion (the big one). This rod casts pretty well. I find that the fast action tip helps create a little whip when I'm casting light cranks. As mentioned above, winds in your face are going to severely limit your casting ability.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

I have noticed that my 2000 series reel doesn't get the distance that my cheaper 3000 series reel gets.

I fish primarily with 8 lbs mono and have entertained the idea of switching to braid as the smaller diameter and lighter weight should have less resistance for those 1/4 or 1/3 oz to cast out.

My 7ft rod is a medium action medium taper; possibly getting a faster tip will allow me to load up the rod for further distance.

I suggested the 8ft plus rods as a result of the trend in Musky gear. They have gone to longer rods for more distance and better handling characteristics

The one comment I have is using 1 piece vs 2 pc blanks I love my Berkley 7' and the Abu Garcia I used to have but someone stole it from the parking lot :(... Another thing I see more and more guys use surf rods even 11-12' for longer range casting (from shore that is) we do great using that technique at Devils Lake When the Browns move furthe away from shore and we have to still cast our jointed rapalas a hefty distance.
For the wisconsin/baraboo river my only best choice is 7' as there is tons of trees and overhanging cliffs to take care of any longer blank...

Does anyone use Buck's Best Crappie Rod Or MicroMaster series for Walleyes (I know I am nuts but I rig mine with 2# red cajun cast and have a blast even with 5-6#ers) Love ultralight fishing... You lose some but it is always a greater feat when you do retrieve them

I use a 7' Shimano, 25 dollar rod that is a little slower that loads-up better than some higher priced, faster tipped rods. I use a old style Diawa SS Tourny.

The line is 10# Firewire.

I saw article in In-fisherman about useing a custom Ugly Stick blank 7+ feet long.

I have this same reel on a 6' GLoomis for bass jigs. That thing loads up and fires baits! I wish there was something that loaded-up like that rod, but cheaper.

One other thing is that the slower rods don't rip baits out of fish like the stiffer faster rods.

Let us know anything new.

update. I purchased a shimano clarus (casting) med action 8'6" road to test and found that the medium action was a little too stiff for lures i was throwing. CC shad rapala's. I exchanged it for a schimitar 8'6" medium action spinning the different rod material made the medium action softer then the clarus. The schimtar loaded better with the smaller lures. I found the longer rod increased my casting distance by about 15-25% which allowed me to cover more water. I liked the fact the longer rod would react to the fish when they would go on runs and hard dives. Down side for a walleye rod the 15" rear grip is too long. Might need to cut 4-6 inches off the back.

one other thing I thought of - Fireline(or other good braid) in smaller diameter helps your cast projectile some because you seem to whip the smaller lures with more certainty, but I agree that a longer rod sometimes casts shorter distances if built does not allow for more.
I like the idea with the spacious tip-guide (one thing I have as second thoughts is loss of warranty if it is a pricey tool)... Sorry just the seller in me kicked in
