Przekurat, Rusin Win Lake Dubay Tournament
"The fish turned on big time just before the storm hit," said Jerry Przekurat from Junction City, WI , who along with partner Rand Rusin from Stevens Point, WI won the Lake Dubay tournament on the Gander Mountain Grand National Walleye Cup's (GNWC) Wisconsin Region on Sunday.

According to Gander Mountain GNWC Tournament Director Dean Higgins, the thunderstorm rolled in around 8:30 a.m., and Przekurat and Rusin used that pre-storm window of opportunity to help them cash the $1100 first place check with a six-fish limit weight of 11.42 pounds. They also took the Berkley Trilene Big Fish Award of $400 in Berkley products for their 3.01 pounder.

Second place and a check for $550 went to Cory Brish from Stevens Point, WI and Joe Polum from Plover, WI with a six-fish limit weighing 9.64 pounds.

Robert Blosser from Lodi, WI and Gary Tomlinson from Poynette, WI used a six-fish weight of 9.32 pounds to take third place and the $480 third place check.

Higgins was impressed with the way the local teams worked their home water. "The local teams really did a good job today. They told me before the tournament started that Lake Dubay is really tough because of the little nooks and crannies and all the timber. The more you fish it, the more little secrets you learn."

The top two teams both fished jigs in the timber to take their fish, and both teams sorted through a lot of fish throughout the tournament. The winners used a variety of colors (orange, yellow and green) tipped with fathead minnows to take their fish. Most came in the 8-11' of water, but the big fish came in 3' of water.

Przekurat and Rusin were happy with the win. Rusin also noted, "We had a great time at this tournament. The tournament ran very well."

Brish and Polum also worked jigs in the timber, but found them in 6' and shallower water. Yellow and orange worked best tipped with minnows worked best, and they stayed in the same stretch of trees all day. They had a good bite going, but Brish felt, "We could have done without the thunderstorm!"

Blosser and Tomlinson used a different strategy and pulled crankbaits at 1.8 to 2.2 mph in 7-10' of water. Prism Shads worked well, but they also tipped the front hooks with pieces of nightcrawlers. Blosser gave thanks to "Matzuo Mazanet Marina because they helped provide us with what we needed to perform."

The "Yo So Close" award of a Yo Net folding net valued at $80 went to the three teams that placed just out of the money. They include Phil Smith from Fon du Lac, WI and Tom Moulton from Canbria, WI in 8th place; Craig Swatek from Wisconsin Rapids, WI and Scott Swatek from Lone Rock, WI in 9th place; Greg and Darrell Aldridge from Eau Claire, WI in 10th place.

Tom Norwood, JR from Chili, WI and Ed Goehring from Wisconsin Rapids, WI were the winners of the Gander Mountain "Need More Stuff" drawing of $200 for a Gander Mountain Shopping Spree.

Higgins noted the numbers of fish caught. "There were lots of fish taken, but it took a lot of sorting because of all the short fish. I continue to be impressed with the commradery of the teams and the excitement they continue to bring to each tournament."
