| Doc Bruce Nets 4th PWT Win at Ottertail |
Bruce "Doc" Samson won his fourth PWT tournament, the Lund Pro-Am, part of the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail Super Pro series. He was competing against the top 60 walleye pros in the world on Otter Tail Lake in west-central Minnesota.
The Super Pro series, presented by MinnKota, is an invitational, based on past tournament successes. Samson, Minnetrista, Minn., won the $55,000 first prize. Second-place pro Daryl Christensen, Montello, Wis., won $15,000. Mark Christianson, Walker, Minn., was third for $10,000.
Samson's 34.49 pounds was six better than second and nearly 10 more than third. He primarily fished slip bobbers, with the key being 1/16th ounce Northland Thumper jigs. "The tiny spinners on the bottom of the jigs made the difference," he said. He also credited a tremendous number of hours studying maps over the winter, then saving his trails and best spots each evening on his computer, and reviewing his findings. Samson fished rocky reefs mostly in the mid-lake area. He also found some rock piles on Diamond Flat that produced.
Christensen captured second place by casting one-fourth ounce Hopkins spoons with Mustad round bend red #6 hooks. He added no bait and jigged the spoons back to the boat in short hops in 7 to 14 feet of water. The third place Christiansen rigged his way to success.
Anglers trolled crankbaits, ran spinners behind bottom bouncers, plus the tactics described by the top three, and tried everything imaginable to put a PWT limit of four walleyes in the boat each day. The walleyes were donated to the Ottertail Nursing Home, the Battle Lake Good Sam Home and the Fergus Falls Veterans Home.
The Ottertail Country Association and Lund Boats cooperated to bring the PWT to the area and provided the many volunteers necessary for the success of the mission. Both received PWT Superior Achievement Awards. The final day crowd of 2,000 walleye fans enjoyed the stage ceremonies and the PWT Outdoor Festival.
Special awards went to amateur/co-angler winner Bruce Boyne, Wadena, Minn. He won the $15,000 Lund boat, which he announced on stage would be traded immediately on the new Lund 2010 model, a 20-foot tiller with a Merc 175. Boyne also won $500 for the Coleman Big Fish he caught with Christianson on day two. Christianson won $1,500. Christianson also won the E-Cell Heavyweight award of $1,000 for the largest catch of the tournament, 14.22 pounds. Coleman Cool Under Pressure awards went to Dan Plautz, Muskego, Wis., for advancing 44 places, and amateur Chris Roehl, Elizabeth, Minn., for moving up 48 places.
Bill Ortiz, Richland Center, Wis., took over the Johnsonville Brats Angler of the Year race. He finished fourth at Ottertail, and was 15th at Chamberlain, SD, the first Super Pro. | Christensen, Samson Rule the Water on Day Two |
Veteran In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail anglers Bruce Samson and Daryl Christensen remained the top two pros in the Lund Pro-Am at Ottertail, Minn. Samson from Minnetrista, Minn., and Christensen from Montello, Wis., flopped positions from day one.
They are competing in the Super Pro series presented by Minn Kota on Otter Tail Lake, a 13,000 acre natural lake filled with an amazing amount of structure in west-central Minnesota. The 60 Super Pros fished a dozen tactics on hundreds of miles of rock and sand breaks and patrolled weed edges.
On Thursday, June 15, at the final day weigh-in, the pros will share their secrets at the Ottertail Fairgrounds (near the water tower). Festivities start about 5:30 p.m.
A large crowd of walleye fans and families enjoyed the PWT Outdoor Festival, set-up adjacent to the weigh-in stage. Free activities include a rock climbing wall and a "host your own PWT television show" simulator presented by the Outdoor Channel. The free trout fishing pond is sponsored by Cabela's and Shakespeare with youngsters able to win rod and reel combos and tackle bags. The free shooting gallery (air rifles) is presented by GAMO. These activities open at 1 p.m., and run through the final-day stage ceremonies.
Samson and Christensen have five PWT victories combined, and look to add one more trophy and the $55,000 first prize to one of their collections. Both have won more than $200,000 on the PWT tour. Samson, with 24.81 pounds is about one pound ahead of Christensen, and about seven pounds ahead of Super Pro Mark Christianson, Walker, Minn.

| StowMaster Pro Christensen Leads PWT Lund Super Pro |
Veteran pro Daryl Christensen, Montello, Wis., jumped into the day one lead at the Lund Pro-Am in Ottertail, Minn. He was one of 60 Super Pro anglers fishing the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail tournament on Otter Tail Lake. He weighed a 4-fish limit for 13.81 pounds, a two-pound advantage over second place pro Bruce "Doc" Samson, Minnetrista, Minn.
Christensen has two previous victories on Lake Erie and Lake Stockton. Samson has three wins, with two on Devils Lake and another at Mille Lacs. A third of a pound back at 11.65 pounds is pro Danny Plautz, Muskego, Wis. Pro Rick Franklin, Park Rapids, Minn., holds fourth with
10.97 pounds.
Fishing Otter Tail Lake was fun for the Super Pros during practice and on day one of the Lund Pro-Am. They found walleyes tucked into every imaginable spot on the lake. Some anglers trolled crankbaits, many dragged live bait (leeches and minnows mainly - perch would eat any night crawler dropped into the water), others jigged weed edges and in the cabbage, while slip bobbers were favored by a few. Bottom bouncers and spinners were an effective tool.
The Minnesota state law allows one walleye over 20 inches per person, which meant that each Pro-Am partnership could weigh two "big" fish and two from 14 to 20 inches. Or, they could weigh four in the 14 to 20-inch range. Two-thirds of the Pro-Am partners caught limits on day one.
The Coleman Big Fish leader is Danny Plautz and his amateur partner Dennis Cornelius, Plymouth, Minn. Their walleye tipped the scales to 6.29 pounds. Christensen's largest fish went 5.68 pounds.
Christensen fished with policeman Jack Harris, Boyertown, PA. He leads the amateur division. Fred Sanchez, Fergus Falls, Minn, is in second, and Cornelius is in third. | Otter Tail Lake Walleyes to Meet PWT Super Pros |
Nestled in west-central Minnesota's resort community are hundreds of lakes. The largest, Otter Tail at 13,000 acres, will be home to the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail Super Pro tournament June 13-15.
This event, the Lund Pro-Am, will take place Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Fishing will be on the lake, with weigh-in ceremonies and the PWT Outdoor Festival family activities all taking place at the Ottertail Fairgrounds, just off Hwy. 108 near the water tower.
The Super Pro series presented by MinnKota is an invitational to the top 60 touring walleye pros. They made it into this elite field based on past successes, wins, finishes, money earned, etc.
They will be joined by 60 amateurs/co-anglers each day, and search for walleyes. The amateurs fish with a new pro each day and use the pro's gear and tackle and fish together as partners for the maximum boat weight.
"Even though this is the smallest lake ever fished by the PWT contestants, it will fish much larger," said PWT executive director Jim Kalkofen. When the mapping experts at LakeMaster ProMaps created their detailed Otter Tail chart, they were amazed at the structure.
The locals know about the many humps, bumps, steep breaks, and the holes in the sand flats that all hold walleyes. "The LakeMaster technology maps about 3,000 to 4,000 acres a day for a typical lake. It took them three weeks to chart Otter Tail. It's a maze of walleye structure." Kalkofen said.
At the Lund Pro-Am, the 60 boats will each be allowed four fish per day, with only two over 20-inches. The pros and their daily partners will convoy from the lake to the Fairgrounds for a weigh-in that will take place between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The Festival with a Cabela's/Shakespeare fishing pond, Outdoor Channel rock-climbing wall, Gamo air rifle shooting range and a "host your own PWT television show" simulator for youngsters. These activities begin at 1 p.m. and run to 7 p.m. and are free of charge.
Bob Propst, Jr., Fort Pierre, SD, will lead the field out Tuesday, June 13. He won the inaugural Super Pro at Chamberlain, SD, on the Missouri River casting jigs with PowerBait Minnows. Following the final day, Thursday, the pros share their tactics and locations, describe boat control, explain how Lowrance electronics helped them find key spots, and their secrets.
