Kaufmann, Weisz Take Mercury Team of the Year honors in South Dakota's Grand National Walleye Cup
The team of Scott Kaufmann from Spencer and Todd Weisz from Parkston used a second place finish on the Missouri River at Mobridge on Sunday, July 20 to capture the 2003 Mercury Team of the Year honors on the South Dakota Circuit of the Grand National Walleye Cup (GNWC).

"Scott and Todd did exactly what they had to do to win the title. They really broke open a very tight race with their six-fish limit today. It has been exciting watching the top teams battle for the team of the year honors in South Dakota," said GNWC Tournament Director Dean Higgins.

Winning the Mobridge qualifier and a $1000 was the team of Dennis Foster from Millette and David Voigtes from Aberdeen with a six-fish limit that weighed 10.12 pounds.

Kaufmann and Weisz followed in second place with a six-fish limit weighing 9.03 pounds. They pocketed $500 in addition to the team of the year honors.

Kevin Marso from Brookings and Jon Kottke from Volga took third place and a check for $250 with a six-fish limit weighing 8.99 pounds.

Dave Bies from Sioux Falls and Glen Eimers from Chamberlain took the Abu Garcia Big Fish Award of two 6500 Linecounter reels with a 2.82 pound walleye.

The Berkley Family Angler Award of $250 in Berkley product for the top placing family team went to Randy and Sheryl Brown from White, who finished in sixth place with 8.81 pounds.

The top teams headed south as far as 20 miles to find their fish. "Most of the teams trolled using live bait," said Higgins. "We did make the decision to not release the fish because many of them came out of deep water and were struggling at the weigh-in. So, we cleaned the fish and donated them to the Northern Oahe Rescue Team. They were very appreciative of our efforts, and the fillets went to a good cause."

The Mobridge qualifier was the final regular tournament on the GNWCs South Dakota circuit. Up next will be the South Dakota State Championships on Richmond Lake, August 23-24. "As we get closer to the State Championships, we will release the teams who have qualified and the itinerary for the two-day event," added Higgins.
