Keller and Bastian Have Continued Success at WWA WI-UP Team Challenge Event
OSHKOSH, WI- Jess Keller and Daniel Bastian continued their successful 2003 season by winning the third stop on the World Walleye Association WI/UP Team Challenge division held on Lake Winnebago June 1st.

Having just come off a second place finish at the WI/UP Team Challenge event on the Castle Rock Flowage, Keller and Bastian put together another excellent game plan and topped the largest field of the year in the WI/UP division.

Going into the tournament with three patterns they felt could produce them the winning weight, Keller and Bastian found that in the end, they only needed one of their patterns to give them the win.

Keller and Bastian started the day by jigging the edges of an upper lakes cane bed, but when that didn t produce, they went to pattern number two, which was to jig by the mouth of the Wolf River in Lake Poygan. This pattern proved to be the ticket as they caught 9 fish at this spot, 5 of which were over the 15in minimum size limit. Jigs tipped with leeches and crawlers were the answer for Keller and Bastian to catch their 13.33- pound basket and net them a check for $3200!

Dale Howard and John Geiger took second place with a weight of 11.71-pounds.

Chris and Gina Gasser placed third with 10.81 pounds.

Jay Stelmach and Andy Woods caught the big fish of the tournament which weighed 5.89-pounds.

The tournament was run out of the beautiful Pioneer Inn, Lake Winnebago s premier lodging spot and the site of the 2003 World Walleye Association National Championship.

WWA WI-UP Division Heading to Lake Winnebago
The third stop in the World Walleye Association WI/UP Team Challenge Division will be held on one of Wisconsin's premier walleye fisheries, the sprawling Lake Winnebago chain, Sunday, June 1st, 2003.

The Pioneer Inn, the premier lodging spot on Lake Winnebago located at the mouth of the Fox River in Oshkosh, will be the site for the take off and weigh in. The Pioneer Inn is also the site of the 2003 World Walleye Association National Championship.

This is one of the best times of year to fish Lake Winnebago and it s connected upper lakes, as fish are currently active throughout the system.

Walleyes are on the move in the system, returning to Winnebago from spawning up the Wolf River. Many of these post spawn fish have already made their way back to the main lake, joining the fish that never leave. But some of these fish have stayed in the three upper lakes, Poygan, Winneconnie and Butte De Morts, along with the always-present resident fish, as they encounter an abundant food supply.

The river portions of the chain is also a spot that shouldn t be overlooked as it can hold a good supply of resident fish and walleyes moving out to Winnebago.

These abundant fish holding locations offer anglers the chance to use a variety of techniques in their pursuit of the winning weight and with the sheer size of the system, it is possible for competitors to fish all day and never encounter another team in the tournament.

Entry is limited to 100 teams and since this has been one of the most popular tournaments in the WI/UP division, it is recommended to sign up as soon as possible.

The WWA is a friendly, fun, and affordable way to participate in the competitive world of walleye fishing. Extensive media coverage of tournament results can be found on numerous websites along with coverage in the Badger Sportsman Magazine, the official publication of the WWA. Subscriptions to the Badger Sportsmen are included when anglers become members of the WWA.

The WWA also offers a National Championship at the end of the year for qualifying teams. For 2003, the WWA National Championship will be held on Lake Winnebago, Wi. September 18th, 19th, & 20th. The winning team at the National Championship will win a first place prize of $20,000!

These are just some of the reasons anglers choose to fish the WWA, a tournament circuit for fisherman, run by fisherman.
